Sometimes, all you need is a change in scenery. Explore the best of Bridgend County on foot. Try one of these three hidden gems.

Try the 5 mile River Ogmore and Merthyr Mawr Circular Walk. Explore the best of Bridgend as you follow the rush of the River Ogmore, passing the pretty village of Merthyr Mawr on your way. Starting in Bridgend Town Centre, why not start with a tasty breakfast in one of the cafes the town has to offer, or head down to the indoor market for some Welsh cakes to enjoy along the way. You'll soon leave town behind walking through the ash and oak trees in the tranquil Craig-y-Parcau woodlands, following the river Ogmore towards Merthyr Mawr Village and Dunes. A little further along stands the 15th century Dipping Bridge, with holes in the parapet so farmers could push their reluctant sheep into the river for their annual dip. Following the riverside trail, passing through the pretty village of quaint thatched cottages towards the atmospheric ruins of Ogmore Castle.

Step outside this January to enjoy the wonderful woodlands when you walk the 2.5 mile Nant Bryn Glas Circular walk starting in the village of Coychurch, home to 13th century St Crallo church and taking in the Norman castle in Coity. For a small village Coychurch has plenty of options for a well earned post walk lunch or pint by a roaring fire. Why not stay a while, spend a night or two at the charming Coed Y Mwstyr Hotel set within the leafy woodland.

Take a tour of the great Welsh Valleys as you stroll or cycle the Ogmore Valley Trail which runs from Aberkenfig to Nant-y-Moel. The whole route is flat and traffic-free! Blackmill village is half way with two pubs, village shop and Smoke Pit Bistro if you need to refuel. Look out for heritage interpretation panels and scan the QR codes to access the  Ogmore Valley Heritage Audio Trail to hear wonderful stories of the Valley’s past? And walk the 2 km loop at the old Ogmore Washeries site with newly installed paths, benches and artwork.
