When Rita, a married girl who works as a hairdresser, enrolls in a university course in order to broaden her horizons, she has no idea what the end of the journey will be. Her cynical tutor, Frank, the frustrated poet, brilliant academic and committed drinker, is not very enthusiastic about taking Rita under his wing. But they both come to realise how much they have to learn from each other.
